Swinford Denies Abusing Authority In Trying To Force Campaign Contributor’s Products On TDH
Rep. David Swinford (R-Dumas) told Amarillo’s KVII-TV that he was simply trying to get more tobacco settlement money for the Panhandle after he was accused of harassing health officials about using a product marketed by his friend and financial supporter.
Yeah. Um hum. Sure:
“Have I threatened them {Health Department workers}? You bet I have… We need to get this program out to our children or we’ll deal with them, absolutely!” said Swinford on Wednesday.
Executive Director of a non-partisan lobbying group out of Austin, called “Common Cause” countered… “that’s a direct threat and I call that bullying.” said Suzy Woodford.
The flack has, however, given his opponent Anette Carslile (whom he tried unsuccessfully to get off the ballot), some ammo:
“It is apparent that Mr. Swinford would much rather line the pockets of a close friend rather than actually work to keep our children from smoking.” said Carlisle.
Swinford, of course, denies the claim. You’ve got to love Republican primaries.
