“A Ron Paul Republican”

By Vince Leibowitz  on Feb 16, 2006 in 2006 Texas Elections

[Author's note: Thanks to the anonomous tipster who sent me the Republican Liberty Caucus of Texas's recent e-newsletter. Keep those tips coming!]

The buzzword among conservative Democrats used to be that they were “Ralph Hall Democrats.” Now, ultra-conservative Republicans are saying that they’re “Ron Paul Republicans.” The Republican Liberty Caucus, which is touting several “Ron Paul Republicans” in their current e-newsletter, actually defines the term on its website:

Ron Paul Republican. (ron-pol-ri-publi-ken) n. A person favoring a pro-liberty republic as the best form of government. A Republic in which the U.S. Constitution is honored and upheld in order to maintain and improve the economic freedom and individual liberty of the people. The honorable Ron Paul is a U.S. Congressman, representing Texas, that has inspired this definition.

Of course, Ron Paul (R-Surfside) (yes, the same Ron Paul who defeated Bob Gammage all those years ago), isn’t really a Republican. Via Wikipedia, he’s actually a Libertarian.

Anyway, it appears there must be some other Libertarians in GOP clothing running for office, because the Republican Liberty Caucus is touting them like wildfire.

In addition to calling out for support for Paul, who has a GOP Primary opponent this year, the RLC is asking for support for Don Zimmerman in HD 50 and John Devine in HD 126. Here’s (some of) what their e-newsletter had to say:

Congressman Ron Paul, District 14, Galveston area, has a Republican Primary challenger this year.

Please help ensure that our beloved Congressman can continue to represent all of us in Congress.

DON ZIMMERMAN NEEDS YOUR HELP:

If you’ve been waiting for your chance to help a pro-Liberty Republican this year, with a strong chance to win, now is your opportunity to make a difference.

Our friend Don Zimmerman is running for State Rep., in District 50, north Austin area, and he needs your help.

Please help a fellow “Ron Paul” Republican!

JOHN DEVINE NEEDS YOUR HELP:

We’ve found another winnable pro-Liberty Republican candidate.

Our friend John Devine, and “Ron Paul” styled Republican, is running for State Rep., in District 126, north Houston area,
and he needs your help.

Is it just me, or do these little snippets sound like Ku Klux Klan endorsements from the 1920s?

It puzzles me that Don Zimmerman who is considered a conservative
who supposedly purports the free enterprize system, supports
government vouchers for private schools. Ron Paul is also weak
on this issue. Government vouchers will destroy private education
by bringing them under the government accountablity system.
