Victor Morales’ Brother On The Race
By Vince Leibowitz on Feb 28, 2006 in 2006 Texas Elections, WTF?
As best as I can tell, Victor Morales’ brother Joe posted a comment recently to Capitol Annex. It’s here, with the full comment in the jump.
If, however, this isn’t “the” Joe Morales, my appologies. However, given that it appears Mr. Morales (Joe) has commented on blogs before, I feel it is genuine.
First and foremost, although I’ve endorsed Ciro Rodriguez and do not believe Victor Morales will win this race (but he might force a runoff), let me say two things: I’ve got tremendous respect for Victor Morales, especially for what he did in 1996. As Democrats, I feel we can disagree and still remain harmonious. And, as a Democrat, I appreciate dissent. So, thank you, Joe Morales, for posting. It opens up dialogue (sorely needed in the comments here in the Annex) and, last but not least, makes me damned glad to know someone is reading this blog.
So, I’ll do you one better, since I’m in a “reasonably” good mood today: To all candidates in CD-28 (yes, even you Henry Cuellar), and in the interest of fairness being a nice guy, if you email me a 100-word-or-less snippit about why voters should vote for you, I’ll give all three of ya’ll “airtime” (in different posts) on the Annex. The catch: the piece cannot be written by a staffer (i.e., I want each candidate to write at the bottom of the email (in these exact words, no less), “Hey, I’m Henry Cuellar/Victor Morales/Ciro Rodriguez, and I actually wrote this.” Otherwise, it’s on the Honor System.) Obviously, email addresses WILL NOT be published. So, all you Ciro, Henry & Victor Staffers: get to work and print this blog post for your bosses! Two notes: (1) deadline is FRIDAY, MARCH 3, and (2) the only way to find out about this is via the blog. No emails to the campaigns, etc. I want to see how many loyal staffers are out there lurking in the dark. I may be surprised, I may be dissapointed.
Here’s what Joe Morales had to say (Just FYI, my favorite line was: “Cuellar on the other hand takes credit for everyting except being the first man on Mars and curing Cancer.”):
The bloggers still can’t get it right. Victor is the only progressive in this race. Cuellar is a Republican and Ciro
is a flat out liberal who toes the party line. Can anyone name one piece of legislation that Ciro put for that was good
for the entire 28th district? No just for a special interest, but for everyday working stiffs. Both ciro and Cuellar talk
about how much money they can bring in to the district but they never tell you how what legislation they propose to PAY FOR IT.
Victor is basically an independant BLUE DOG democrat. He does NOT believe in earmarking or giving away the US treasury for projects that should be handled by the locals. He is by far stronger on defense whether it be on the border or overseas that the other two who give lip service and talking points to questions about our military and immigration. Victor would absolutely vote to shut down ILLEGAL immigration whether it be by the use of The National Guard, a lot higher fines for those that break the employment laws and KNOWINGLY hire illegals or funding thousands more Border Guards. Security and adherance to our nations
Laws comes first. Then he would work to change the way we allow LEGAL workers in to the US which he knows are absolutely necessary to our economy. He has a lot more ideas in line with the majority of Americans but he should be the one to answer those questions and he will. As far as the military is concerned, Victor is the only one of the three who HAS ACTUALLY served his country.(US NAVY/1970 to 72) The other two talk about supporting the troops, but who DOESN’T? The Valley STILL does not have a hospital to treat the high number of Vets in that area. I know for a fact that that would be a priority for Victor. And if a hospital is not in the budget, he has talked about giving Vets access to local area hospitals with the VA picking up their medical tabs via a voucher, VA ID card or some other method of distinguishing Vets from other patients. What did Ciro and Cuellar do for Vets but talk LOUD and DO NOTHING. How would I know?? I work for a Medicare supplier of Power Wheelchairs and
Scooters for the elderly so I see it and hear it everyday. Both Ciro and Cuellar talk a good game but deliver very little
that has a direct impact on the majority of the people in the district. They bring home PORK just so they can get re-elected.
If Ciro is such a good candidate, there would have been no Cuellar win last cycle. They talk about education being key, have done nothing to stop Pell Grants from being cut, and the No Child Left Behind bill from being fully funded. A good congressman may vote the correct way, but if he has no persuasive skills, then he can’t HELP convince others to vote the right way. So what good is his vote if he is always on the losing side. Principle you say? That doesn’t help seniors, vets, students, union workers, minimun wage workers, enviromentalists or others in need of sound government at all. Ciro has no skills in changing the way government works for everyday folks. Talk is cheap. Cuellar on the other hand takes credit for everyting except being the first man on Mars and curing Cancer. If you have received all of his mailers you’d think he was the greatest thing since Mother Teresa and Pope John Paul. Typical politician. Take credit for everything and deliver very little, but just
enough money to special interests to get re-elected. And by the way, Pleasanton IS, I repeat IS Victor’s home. He only LIVES in Crandall and that will change now that his kids are out of school and on their own. He has always stated that he would be coming HOME once the kids were out of school, to be nearer the rest of us, his family who have always resided in Atascosa and Wilson County (in the Heart of Dist 28, right in the center. Ciro wasn’t even born in the US so how can he be calling Victor a Carpetbagger? His family settled in the Del Rio/Eagle Pass area. Our family has been here since the 1800’s and maybe before that. (we haven’t tracked that far back). Remember, Abraham Lincoln lost 5, FIVE, Cinco, 1/2/3/4/5, Congressional races BEFORE finally winning one. Where would this country be if he had given up or listen to all those goofballs who think that 3 times is enough? Why was Victor’s ability to garner 44 percent and 2,450,000 votes any less that Ron Kirk’s 43 percent and less than 2 million votes. And Kirk spent MILLIONS more and had the support of all the party big wigs and still could not reach the numbers Victor did. Even Tony Sanchez’s 60 plus million could get him any where near Victor’s vote count. And Ciro could not come up
with 60 more votes?? That tells me more about his ability to motivate and his popularity than of Cuellars performance.Victor is a working stiff and doesn’t not have access to the big money that others do because he refuses to SELL OUT. Being a government teacher he KNOWS that is not the way to run a campaign, but he IS a man of principle and is only running because people keep asking him to. He is more than happy to keep teaching and has always accepted the call of the voters. But not of the establishment. Those who want the status quo, will vote for professional lifetime politicians and those who are tired of the same old, same old will finally vote for change whether it be for Victor or someone else in the future. You get what you vote for so don’t complain that politicians are all corrupt, listen only to those who donated to them, let Social Security go to hell, get us in more wars, keep your wages low, let gas prices drive us to bankruptcy, keep our kids from attending college due to cost, sell us out to the highest foreign bidder, etc. By the by I am a Viet nam vet, served on the gun line aboard the USS Orleck DD886 and am as patriotic as any other fool out there. But I don’t give credance to Chicken Hawks and those so called patriots that have never tried to serve the public in some way or another and are willing to let others do their dirty work.
So let’s see some real people run for office for a change and not just complain and badmouth others who try. I, like a lot of others are tired of the politicians we currently have. Time for REAL change and if it means tossing them all out, I am all for it.

[...] You know, I’ve been sitting here thinking about it for the past hour (ever since I first saw the Capitol Annex post on its essay request), and I’ve decided… I’m having my own essay "contest". It’s not just for CD-28, though. Here you go: [...]
