[I asked Barbara Radnofsky, who will be in a runoff election on April 11 for U.S. Senate, to send us a guest post for Capitol Annex from time to time and she has agreed. Here is her first post. So readers could tell future guest potsts, this and future posts will appear under her name. Don't forget to help out Barbara via her website.]
We’re still running our webcast from our victory party at www.radnofsky.com, as we had a healthy win in the primary with no paid media and no direct mail. It was truly a grass roots win. I view the runoff as a critical opportunity: the essential learning experience and opportunity to move to the next level and run a second state wide race concentrating on name recognition, my positives and contrasting with Kelly’s negatives, pointing out he is an 80 year old recluse with no intention of campaigning against the incumbent Republican and her rubberstamping of failed administrative policies.
It will cost me in the 6 figures to get direct mail out, but we have to get to those loyal, good Dems across the state, from all communities and regions, who may vote in such a dem runoff. Of course, I continue to need help with volunteers, GOTV, spreading the word, and donations to www.radnofsky.com.
The evening of the primary, we hired Seth Davidson as the Campaign Manager and Katie Floyd as Communications Director. The next day we selected office space and furniture. The next day we committed to the direct mail campaign and thanked the Chairman of the State Democratic Party for his endorsement. Both Bob Gammage and Chris Bell have endorsed, and many others are listed at the website.
If we hadn’t had this runoff, we’d never have had the opportunity to make a massive appeal and get my name out in a state mailing one, two or three times or to ask people like the folks on this blog to please rouse others out of their apathy and go vote (early on April 3 and in the election on april 11). As I mentioned, and to his credit, the Chairman of the State Dem Party has endorsed me, which is not often done in a contested dem race.
Having a runoff in April and the efforts of my campaign will be hepful to motivate the loyal dem base for the fall as well. We need folks running and discusiing issues. The issues chart has just been updated on the issues section of the website.
I’m told the entrenched power brokers fear me and have, in certain counties, motivated their extremists to cross into the dem primary to vote against me. It didn’t work to any great degree, but makes for odd results in certain counties, doesn’t it.
Without the experience of the runoff, we wouldn’t have the advantage of another state wide election, helping us to develop what it takes to win the general. Similiarly, without a contested primary, we’d have had less experience so necessary for statewide field and gotv.
Vince, I’ve followed your postings for a long time and thank you for your comments and interest. I know you call it as you see it. I’ve enyoyed your part of east Texas many times in the past two years, and will never forget taking off my shoes so I could clamber up that flat bed trailer used as a speaking platform at the opening of the new dem headquarters in Van Zandt County. The past 330 trips have been memorable, and this runoff should be viewed as an essential part of the journey. It makes us stronger and more experienced. How many Texas democrats can say they have won more than one state-wide election? On April 11, we’ll enjoy making that announcement.
We are coordinating statewide volunteer activities with Shellee, our volunteer coordinator, who can be reached at volunteers-at-radnofsky.com. We are rwaching out to the entire state and would like representation at each senatorial district convention. Please contact Shellee to help us. Today, we received word that Democratic Senate Leader Reid and Senator Durbin confirmed to co-host a DC fundraiser for the campaign in April.
Regards,
BAR

[Blog Owner's Note: I fully support Barbara Radnofsky for United States Senate and asked her to guest blog for us. This is not a paid political advertisement or anything of the sort; I offered Barbara the opportunity to reach the Texas Blogsphere via this post in that she may get out the message of her campaign, which I believe is a message Texans need to hear.]
