The Case For Steve Stockman? We Know Of One Important Person Who Might Advocate Him…

The Red State (not the Texas based one), is making the case for why Steve Stockman should be the one to inherit the plantation from Tom DeLay.
Here are a couple of reasons The Red State offers in making this judgement call:
1.)Stockman is a proven winner. He won in a 5-1 Democratic district in the same area in 1994, defeating a 42 year Democratic incumbent (and Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee). He was only narrowly defeated two years later in 1996 in the same district. The current district is now approximately 2-1 Republican, meaning Stockman’s ability to win crossover Democrats will virtually ensure his victory over Lampson this fall.
2.) He begins the race with excellent name identification, something any other candidate will have to build nearly from scratch.
3.) Stockman has massive fundraising ability. His prior service as a member of congress and his connections to GOP bigwigs such as Morton Blackwell will allow him to easily raise large sums of money to win the seat.
All of that may be true, but it’s been a long time since voters have seen Steve Stockman as anything but a gadfly on the national political scene. And, Stockman has massive baggage, including that he’s a right-wing nut.
One thing, however, that many may not be aware of is that Stockman could easily move to the top of any potential list of candidates with a word from one very highly placed Republican: Jeff Fisher, Executive Director of the Republican Party of Texas.
Fisher served as Stockman’s Chief of Staff when Stockman was in Congress. You can’t tell me those ties won’t bind…
