Lampson Says If There Is A Special Election In May, He Will Run!

Nick Lampson says he will run in a May special election to fill Tom DeLay’s seat if one is held.

Given, however, that DeLay says he won’t resign until June, it is looking more and more like there will be no election in May in CD-22.

But, if the special election is held later, Lampson may not run, his spokesman Mike Malaise says. Instead, he’ll likely just focus on the November general.
After DeLay officially vacates his office, Gov. Perry has 20 days to set a special election. Insted of setting a special election sooner than November 7, I personaly believe Perry should make them conicide on November 7, even though it would mean CD-22 voters would have to vote twice.
Though GOP leaders seem to favor this option, Lampson says the option of leaving the people unrepresented in the U.S. House for several months is a bad idea. While this may be a bad idea, it would probably benefit Lampson in the long run, as he wouldn’t have to fork out more cash for a special election.

And, the Chron has the latest on how the GOP will select its new nominee:

To select their nominee for the new term, the district’s GOP precinct chairs will elect a representative from each of the four counties in the district — Harris, Fort Bend, Galveston and Brazoria — and those four will choose a Republican for the general election ballot.

Now, though, given that the special may or may not be before the general, potential candidates are making their voices heard on when the nominee should be selected:

Tom Campbell, a Fort Bend County lawyer who came in second in the March Republican Primary, said a special election should be held before Republican leaders select a nominee.

“The November election (should be) informed by the results of the special election.” said Campbell, who has stated his plans to seek the seat. “The selection process should be open, transparent and democratic. We need to avoid any appearance of selection by back-room bargain.”
