More “Who’s The Most Conservative” In GOP Primaries

Here is yet another example of GOP candidates trying to claim the mantle of “Most Conservative In A Republican Primary.”

It seems that the two men vying to lose to Mark Strama (D-Austin) in HD 50 in November may be trying to capatilize on the much publicized plank in the Texas GOP Platform calling for the US to leave the United Nations:

Republican legislative candidate Don Zimmerman complained Saturday that his runoff opponent is trying to mislead voters into thinking he burned an American flag.

In their mailboxes Friday, voters in state House District 50 found a mailer from Jeff Fleece accusing Zimmerman of participating in a flag-burning.

The only problem, Zimmerman said, is that he was burning a United Nations flag, not Old Glory, to protest foreign nations trying to dictate policy to the United States.

“To be accused of burning the American flag when I have done nothing of the sort is the kind of low, vicious and untrue attack that turns many voters away from politics entirely,” Zimmerman said. “It’s not just negative campaigning; it’s lying.”

Fleece defended the mailer, saying voters can tell from the photo that the flag is not the American flag. “I believe the photo speaks for itself,” he said.

Do you mean, “it speaks for itself in that this idiot was out advocating a party platform proposed by other idiots,” or do you mean “he’s a flag-burning radical, and being a flag-burning radical of any kind is just bad news?” More:

In a campaign where both candidates have tried to claim the mantle of the true conservative, Zimmerman complained that Fleece has lied about his record of opposing abortions and criticizing President Bush’s policy of holding Americans without legal representation as part of his war on terror.

Fleece, a United States Military Academy graduate and Dell Inc. manager, has tried to counter Zimmerman’s claim that he is a Johnny-come-lately to conservative causes.

Zimmerman, a software engineer, cites his record as an activist opposing local tax increases and gay marriage and calling for more border security.

Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson, a Zimmerman supporter, said Fleece’s criticism of Zimmerman’s character is “over the top.”
Fleece has countered Patterson’s endorsement with support from former Rep. Jack Stick, who lost the House District 50 seat after Strama criticized his support from U.S. Rep. Tom DeLay’s political committee that was at the center of DeLay’s subsequent indictment and retirement.

Oh, what fun!
