Rick Perry Steps Back From Tax Caps, Takes A Feel-Good Approach?

By Vince Leibowitz  on Apr 10, 2006 in 2006 Texas Elections

Maybe he’s been reading too many self-help and motivation books, but Governor Goodhair seems to have turned into Dr. Feelgood when it comes to his 2002 campaign promise to cap local property taxes:

In recent years, the governor repeatedly had called for lower appraisal caps or revenue limits on local governments, arguing that without them reductions in property tax rates soon would be eroded by rising property values.

He says he still supports the caps but doesn’t want legislators, when they convene April 17, to be distracted by other controversies until they address the court order, which doesn’t require action on property appraisals.

Awww. Isn’t that nice. Governor Perry cares about the legislators’ feelings. He wants them not to be distracted and feel good about what they’re doing.

I’d suspect, however, some Republicans will be mightily peeved at Dr. Feelgood, however, given that he’s been promising this for years and can’t deliver, that, and GOP voters seem to want the caps:

Texas Republican voters overwhelmingly endorsed lower tax caps in a nonbinding referendum on the March 7 primary ballot, but a similar tax limitation measure in Florida has drawn fire for providing large benefits to wealthy homeowners at the expense of businesses and renters.
