Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee To Participate In Qatar forum

From Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee’s office:

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) is a participant at the Doha 6th Forum for Democracy, Development and Free Trade in Doha, Qatar from April 11- 13, 2006.

Congresswoman Jackson Lee is one of the many prominent world officials, U.S. politicians, parliamentarians, diplomats, intellectuals and academicians from various international, governmental and non-governmental organizations taking part.

“The Doha Forum brings together many of the most important leaders and thinkers on the planet to share ideas on democracy, development, commerce between nations.  I am particularly looking forward to participating in that dialogue with my international counterparts.  For example, I am going to address the political reform session of the Doha Forum on the vital necessity aspiring democratic regimes to invest in the education of their youth.  History teaches us that the active engagement of young people is indispensable to the expansion of democracy.”

Congresswoman Jackson Lee will also be meeting with other forum participants to discuss the challenges facing established and emerging democracies in the areas of immigration and globalization.  As the ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Immigration subcommittee, the Congresswoman is the author of the “Save America Comprehensive Immigration Act,” H.R. 2092, widely regarded as perhaps the most humane immigration policy proposal pending in the Congress.

Congresswoman Jackson Lee, a member of the House Progressive Caucus, will also take part in discussions focusing on the finding new ways and means to strengthen the protection of human rights and to prevent the outbreak and spread of international conflict.

“I represent Houston, home to one of the largest ports in the world.  I am, therefore, eagerly looking forward to my meetings with leaders of current and potential trading partners. I plan to let them know what an excellent place Houston is to do business.”

The three-day Doha Forum, co-organized by the supreme planning council, the Qatari Businessmen Association, and the Gulf Studies Centre in collaboration with the conferences permanent committee at the foreign ministry, convenes annually to discuss democracy, development, and globalization-three of the most important questions in the world today.

Wow. Can’t wait for her to return so we can hear more about this trip. Congresswoman Jackson Lee always has enlightened thoughts on just abut every issue, so hopefully we’ll hear more about this.
