Runoff Round Up

The sweetest victory of the night was, for me, that of Barbara Radnofsky winning the runoff for United States Senate. Her defeat of Gene Kelly, while something I fully expected, gives us a truly dedicated candidate and shows her statewide travels have really paid off.

Maria Alvarado’s surprise win over Ben Z. Grant for Lt. Governor, who was endorsed by most major newspapers, adds more diversity to our ticket leading into November.

In HD-146, Borris Miles defeat of Al Edwards puts a Democrat in the House who won’t be another rubber-stamp lieutenant for Speaker Tom Craddick.

Ted Ankrum’s win in CD-10 puts the most qualified candidate on the ballot in that district.

On the GOP side, Charles Holcomb’s win over Terry Keel proves that the strategy of trying to play “who is most conservative” can sometimes backfire–badly.

On the other hand, Ken Mercer’s defeat of Don Montgomery in the State Board of Education District 5 race proves that GOP Primary voters are still, by and large, falling lock-step behind the most far-right-wing, religious right candidates.

Tan Parker’s win in HD 63 proves that Craddick’s support and Leininger’s money can still buy you a victory.

But, on the brighter side of the GOP results: in HD’s 54, 71 and 72 candidates running against right-wingers and voucher supporters were victorious.
