AT&T’s Cash & Net Neutrality

Once again, Sean-Paul at the Agonist has up a great piece on telecom issues. This time, it concerns the large amounts of cash AT&T has poured into the capitol through its lobbyists to raise our telephone rates. Check it out here. Also, Sean-Paul will be on the radio talking about AT&T, net neutrality and other topics tonight. You can hear the broadcast right from your computer here.

To be fair, parties on all sides of these issues spend considerable amounts to promote their own interests. That is the curious thing about the “net neturality” debate. You have folks bemoaning the undue influence of lobbyists on our legislators, while at the same time calling on our legislators to regulate the Internet. In light of recent events, is that really what we want?
Yes, I find it ironic that the folks who bemoan members of Congress being bought and paid for by special interests are the same folks who want them to regulate the internet. It just doesn’t make sense to me.
Net neutrality is a complicated issue that requires much discussion and learning to make reasonable decisions. That being said I think it foolish to suggest that Congress knows best how to deal with the situation and not the consumers. I say keep regualtion out of it and let the market decide.
