Leininger Must See The Writing On The Wall

Gazillionaire voucher pimp James Leininger won’t push for vouchers during the special, and he’s going to cut back on his spending this fall in the general election, the Dallas Morning News tells us.

“It doesn’t’ make sense to me to take any chance of harming the effort to comply with the Supreme Court’s order by bringing up something that’s controversial,” he said.

Hummmmmm…..That’s not really very Leininger. Usually, he’ll take any chance he can get. This leads me to believe that God’s Sugar Daddy has, in fact, seen the writing on the wall and may be lowering his profile at the request of some within the Republican Party of Texas.

I’ve heard some whispering that the Texas GOP is doing its darndest to make sure that as little controversial crap as possible rears its ugly head, given that it could lead to the defeat of incumbents and candidates up and down the ballot this fall.

Note, too, Leininger’s tightening his spending belt and going to become a bit more fiscally conservative when it comes to pimping out his dollars to the Republican Whores in the House:

But Leininger suggested he wouldn’t spend as heavily in the general election.

“I spent an awful lot of money last time. I certainly think we’re going to cut back considerably,” he said.

“I haven’t even taken a look at it to be honest with you, to see what races I might be interested in helping with. We’ve made a commitment to helping people who are committed to helping kids who are in unsafe and failing schools.”

Here, folks, is where the rubber meets the road. The GOP is pro-voucher. But, I’m hearing there may be some fricas at the GOP state convention about vouchers in the state party’s platform. I’ll have more on that later, but my sources are telling me there may be a “grassroots” effort among some more moderate Republicans to try and actually tone-down the state party platform which has, in the past, been the subject of ridicule nation-wide for being so far to the right.

And, you can bet that, if this fight materializes, it will be an ugly one. The GOP’s executive director, Jeff Fisher, chaired the committee that wrote the last platform, if I recall correctly, and, some SREC members have been grumbling lately about whether or not Fisher’s the best fit for the party.

And, of course, Fisher’s also tied to Leininger like a dog on a leash. No need to get into all of that here, but remember that Fisher headed the Texas Christian Coalition and helped engineer (with Leininger cash) the takeover of the State Board of Education by right-wingers back in the 1990s.

So, is Leininger’s retreat in fact a sign of the state GOP’s discontent with him? I’d say yes. Has someone ranking fairly high in the GOP actually called him and said “stand down?” I don’t know, and would doubt it, but I’m sure he’s close enough to the people in power that he’s heard the grumbling and made the decision to make these statements on his own, but based on the discontent.
