Two Texas Dems Vote Against Markey Amendment To Telecom Bill

House Business & Commerce Committee Republicans defeated an effort by Democrats today to strengthen network neutrality provisions in the panel’s telecom reform bill, the Communications Opportunity, Promotion and Efficiency Act of 2006 (COPE), during an open markup session.
Four Democrats broke ranks and joined the Republicans in the panel’s 34-22 vote against an amendment by Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass) which would have prohibited broaband providers from charging content providers different rates based on bandwith consumption.
Under COPE without Markey’s amendment, the proposed business models of AT&T and Verizon to charge content providers extra fee to deliver enhanced services to consumers would be permitted.
Texas Congressmen Gene Green (D-Houston), Tx-29 and Charlie Gonzalez (D-San Antonio), TX-20, sided with the GOP on this one. Here’s the full committee membership.
