Fort Bend Follies

Texas Safety Forum notes that a telephone poll of Republicans in Fort Bend County has shown that their choice for the replacement of Tom DeLay is none other than…Fort Bend County candidates. I’m so shocked I can hardly stand up.
Of course county pride and sectionalism is going to play a major role in the replacement of Tom DeLay. Of course, I think all of that will take a back seat to the Hammer’s wishes and desires as soon as he makes them known to the powers-that-be in the selection process. You can’t tell me that people are going to vote their consience and constituants when they have the opportunity to bow down and cowtow to DeLay.
Anyway, here’s the dirt on the survey:
In an open-ended question asking GOP voters to name their preference for DeLay’s replacement, Fort Bend elected officials David Wallace and Charlie Howard, both from Sugar Land, were the top two preferences, although the overwhelming majority of those answering the survey could not cite a preference. Only 29 of the 159 respondents could name a preference on this question without being prompted with a name.
All respondents participating in the survey were subsequently asked to choose between the top two with this question:
If the race to replace Congressman DeLay were between Fort Bend Republicans (ROTATE ORDER) Charlie Howard and David Wallace, which person would you prefer?
The result of this head-to-head question showed GOP voters narrowly preferring State Representative Charlie Howard over Sugar Land Mayor David Wallace by 30.2% to 27.4%. Undecided constituted 35.2% of those answering.
I do have to note this: has anyone noticed that the Replacement Players for DeLay’s seat are…well, a bit lackluster? I mean, taking over the mantle of the Hammer you’d at least expect some loudmouth like Dan Patrick or someone cut from the same cloth as Steve Stockman or DeLay himself.
Which brings up another interesting point? Why isn’t old Steve being considered? Oh, that’s right: he has so much baggage Nick Lampson would walk right over him.

[...] While the Fort Bend County GOP is having fun with its various and sundry little surveys, the Harris County GOP was actually doing something to try and get a little face time with the men and women who want to take over The Hammer’s fifedom. The biggest news of the day was that Sugar Land Mayor David Harris was a no-show in spite of the fact that he’s already been sending out mailers to raise money for his candidacy. [...]
