If One More Politician Uses The “Blown The Doors Off” Cliche…

You’d think that Carole Keeton Strayhorn would have learned a thing or two from Bill Hammond of Texas Association of Business fame.

Nothing good comes of announcing to anyone that you have “blown the doors,” off of anything:

“We have blown the barn doors off this petition drive,” Strayhorn said.

Well, shut my mouth and smack me in the face with a bowl of hot grits like One Tough Grandma used to make. She did it:

Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn headed to the Texas Secretary of State’s Office a little while ago with 101 half-empty boxes.

That may not matter much because she claimed they contained 223,000 signatures to get her on the ballot for governor. Independent candidates need 45,540 valid signatures to qualify for the ballot.

But, it doesn’t matter.  Like Al Capone’s vault, though, what those boxes contain may not be worth much. It’s up to the Secretary of State to determine which of those 223,000 signatures are worth something, and Strayhorn’s hoping a little over 45,000 will be valid—so she won’t be embarassed like Geraldo Rivera.

After those petitions are examined, let’s just see how far those barn doors flew before they landed.

I’ve heard a rumor from a reliable source (although the source wasn’t sure if this particular rumor is that reliable) that a full 45 percent of the petition signatures from Friedman and Strayhorn are expected to be tossed out by the SOS either because they were collected before the allowable date or for other reasons related to individual petition entries. Hummm…
