Stockman Says He’ll Be On Ballot In CD 22

In yet another independent candidate saga, former Congressman Steve Stockman says he’s collected enough signatures to be on the ballot as an independent this fall in CD-22.
Stockman, in spite of his sorted history, will probably garner enough votes in this race to make life difficult for whomever the CD-22 GOP Executive Committee ends up selecting. Stockman has a pretty good chance of draining siphoning off the votes from the very far right. Given the makeup of that district, someone running to the far right of the GOP nominee is bad news for the Republican nominee but good news for Lampson.
If Stockman has enough money to make himself more of a viable contender, I think it can only spell good news for Lampson. Splitting the ticket on the right is worse than splitting it on the left.
And, there are more positives, but also a negative.
On the positive side, Lampson’s already defeated Stockman once, in his old district.
On the negative side, though, it’ll be a more expensive campaign if Lampson has to run against two “viable” candidates.
And, Lampson getting attacked from two sides will make it a more complicated race. But, given that the district “leans Republican,” Stockman and the eventual coronated GOP nominee will realize they’ve got to hold every vote possible to try to defeat Lampson. This means, naturally, they’ll be attacking each other as much or more than they’ll be attacking Nick Lampson. A brutal, negative campaign on the right will lead to some voters staying away all together and others drifting to Lampson.
Given that the “right” is the bigger piece of the pie, the more ways it’s divided up between candidates, the less one candidate within that “piece of pie” has a chance to gain a majority, or even a plaurality to defeat Lampson.
