Better Off Than Four Years Ago?

In what will probably be my final post on this year’s 2006 Texas GOP Convention, I want to address some remarks made by Governor Rick Perry:

“Are you better off today than you were four years ago?” Perry asked delegates to the Texas Republican Convention, invoking the memory of the nation’s 40th president.Perry answered his own question by ticking off a list of the party faithful’s red-meat issues. A newly enacted property tax cut, restrictions on damages awarded in civil lawsuits and cuts in state spending to bridge a budget shortfall that approached $10 billion.

“The answer is clear,” Perry said. “Texans are better off because Republicans have led for the past four years.”

When I read this, I damned near choked to death on the glass of Coke I was drinking wondering how anyone could be so high on their own rhetoric as to be so blinded that they don’t realize the answer to the question is “Hell, no!” Further, that Perry could misconstrue what his party has done of the last four years for “leading,” made me want to pick up the aforementioned glass of Coke and slosh it right on the smiling photo of the governor displayed along with the Star-Telegram story.

After calming down a bit, I thought it would be a good idea to actually compare where Texas is now with where Texas was four years ago and actually show Governor Perry (and anyone else so blind they can’t see a truth that Ray Charles could see) where Texas was four years ago versus where Texas is now.

Then, barely into gathering stats and information, I realized “what’s the point?” We all know we are miles behind where we were four years ago thanks to Perry and the GOP-dominated legislature. So, I’ll leave you with this, as sort of a point to ponder:

Redistricting
CHIPs
‘Tort Reform’
2003 Budget
Tuition Deregulation
Marriage Amendment
Less Money for State Parks
Tom DeLay

Ponder that.

  1. [...] Governor Perrry on the other hand wants us to answer a question, “Are you better off today than you were four years ago?” And he’s serious.  Vince Leibowitz has a tally of some of Perry’s accomplishments(?) over the last four years: We all know we are miles behind where we were four years ago thanks to Perry and the GOP-dominated legislature. So, I’ll leave you with this, as sort of a point to ponder: Redistricting CHIPs ‘Tort Reform’ 2003 Budget Tuition Deregulation Marriage Amendment Less Money for State Parks Tom DeLay [...]
