From The Blogs: Tuesday, June 27, 2006

Here’s your From The Blogs for Tuesday, June 27, 2006.

In anticipation of the much-awaited decision on Texas Congressional Redistricting from the U.S. Supreme Court, State Rep. Aaron Pena at A Capitol Blog (who testified in the original lawsuit) has a well-thought-out “best guess” on how the case may end up:

It seems that Judge Ward [who wrote the dissenting opinion of the original three-judge federal panel that did the review] supported a contention made by the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund that an extra Latino seat could have been created along the border. Should the plaintiffs succeed it will surround the fact, as noted by Judge Ward, that the State of Texas attempted to benefit from the growth of the Texas Hispanic population while at the same time limiting their opportunities to elect another of their choosing[.]

The Agonist’s Sean-Paul Kelley has a big net neutrailty update that notes even the Christian Coalition is getting in on the act. Woah!

Angry Black Bitch, a popular feminist weblog (which gets an include in FTB on the basis that its author spent some time as a resident of the Lone Star State and is, incidently, one of my personal favorites) has a very entertaining post on Rush Limbaugh and…Viagra. Brains and Eggs has more Limbaugh/Viagra humor (the one about President Bush is especially entertaining).
Bay Area Houston Blog picks up on Congressman Ron Paul’s “Press Release Fau Paux.”

BlogHOUSTON has the details on who the Harris County GOP picked to be their nominee for County Treasurer following the untimely passing of the incumbent earlier this summer.

For your “Only In Texas” Files, check out Burnt Orange Report’s post about a suit against Shipley’s Donuts, which is being sued by workers for maintaining “prison like conditions,” which include employees being beaten. I kid you not.

Robyn at the Capitol Crowd blog has a bit of a tear-jerker about the loss of a Congress Avenue retail legend and former secretary to Governor Coke Stevenson.

Casual Soapbox has some new governor’s race polling numbers. Carole 4n3p has fallen to third. Common Sense has further analysis, showing us how the poll numbers have evolved over the last few months. Also, McBlogger.
Dallas Blog has a pair of Dallas City Council posts worth noting: one about the Wright Amendment ‘deal’ being up for approval Wednesday and another concerning a massive agenda full of spending requests in anticipation of the coming summer recess.

Dos Centavos tells us about a Houston-area judicial candidate taking on right-wing zealots.

Eight Feet Deep has an interesting take on the defeat of the so-called “Flag Burning Amendment:”

Durbin’s amendment failed but it now gives Democrats the chance to point at Republicans and say: “You voted against protecting the funerals of American troops killed in Iraq.” Which is only slightly better than the Republicans being able to say about Democrats: “You voted against protecting the flag.”

Is this a great country, or what?

Eye On Williamson brings us an excellent post on State Rep. Eddie Rodriguez’s thoughts concerning “social equity” and toll roads.

In the Pink Texas has a Koufax-worthy guest post on Louisiana Congressman William Jefferson’s past by a UT professor who was once his pollster.

Just Another Blog has an informative post on OfficeMax’s bad business practices which are helping destroy endangered Texas forests.

Congressman Sylvestre Reyes tells us how the Republicans have yet again blocked a vote on the minimum wage.

The Texas Civil Rights Review blog tells us that Mexican American immigrants commit fewer crimes than citizens.

Wilco Wise has a hilarious post about an employee beer bash held at the brand new facility of a municipal utility district (that’s MUD) in Central Texas.
