Potential Lampson Opponents Coming Up Short

The candidates lined up to replace Tom DeLay in the 22nd Congressional District aren’t just stuck at the starting gate in terms of trying to figure out which of them will replace him, should he ever get off the ballot.

Evidently, the folks in their districts aren’t too confident that any of them can beat Nick Lampson, because their keeping a close reign on their pocketbooks and the candidates cash flows are…well, sad.

As of the June 30 reporting date, Houston City Councilwoman Shelley Sekula-Gibbs reported a paltry $30,061 cash on hand. $10K of that came from PACs funded by fellow dermatologists.

State Rep. Robert Talton has a whopping $750 cash on hand after raising—get ready—$800!!! Yep. He’s real energized about his campaign: he spent a whole $50. Of course, when you only have $800 to begin with, $50 is a lot of money.

Most amusing, however, is that golden boy and presumed heir to the DeLay throne David Wallace failed to meet his $200,000 fund-raising goal.

He raised only $173K and had to loan himself $30 grand to make up the difference. Amusing, amusing, amusing.

I’ll try to round up the other Congressional “warchests” later today.

I’m sorta curious about Charlie Howard in TX-22, but the other 7+ dwarfs, no way they raised any cash at all. What a pathetic showing! Do I need to remind anyone that Lampson raised $609,000 in the same period – AFTER DeLay declared he was dropping out of the race?

  2. Actually, their overall problem is that there is no primary campaign, just an outreach to precinct chairs.

Until it becomes clear that one of these folks will even be permitted on the ballot, nobody is going to give money to a candidate.
