Rafael Anchia On MySpace

By Vince Leibowitz  on Jul 31, 2006 in Texas Legislature

Dallas Blog has a story up that mentions Ron Kirk’s recruitment of State Rep. Rafael Anchia to run for mayor of Dallas.

With that, DB puts up a link to Anchia’s MySpace profile.

My new mission in life is to find out what other legislators are on MySpace.

Why? Because you really get to learn a lot about them from their profiles. Anchia, I learned, likes The Simpsons and Family Guy, two television shows I enjoy as well. I also learned he does not have an I-Pod or a DVD player, the latter of which struck me as odd, but, of course, I swore I’d never switch from Windows 95 (and didn’t until about 2000 as I recall), so I can relate.

Most interesting of all, though, is the sheer number of people commenting on his MySpace page. And, I’m not talking about spammers, either. People offering congrats on the birth of his new baby, people talking about speeches he gave, etc.

As someone who doesn’t use MySpace (though I think I have a profile on there somewhere), I was kind of shocked that that many people would trouble themselves to go and find a state legislator’s MySpace page. Different from blogging, it just seems…more interactive, maybe?

Anyway, kudos to Rep. Anchia for being out there at the forefront of new technologies. Since Rep. Aaron Pena’s A Capitol Blog was our first legislator blog in the Blogsphere, I’m thinking that Anchia now deserves the designation of “First Legislator on MySpace.” (That is, unless someone else knows of other members of the Lege on MySpace. If so, email me–vince_leibowitz-at-cox.net).
