Who’s Going To Run For Congress From San Antonio?

By Vince Leibowitz  on Aug 4, 2006 in 2006 Texas Elections

The better question may be: who isn’t going to run for Congress from San Antonio.

With the remapping of CD-23 as another Latino opportunity district that leans Democratic and its incumbent Henry Bonillia alienated from conservatives in his district, (and the first time in a long time San Antonio Democrats have seen such an opportunity), speculation is rampant on who will run.

Here are the names I’ve heard, and my thoughts:

Julian Castro, former SA Councilman and Mayoral Candidate; Ciro Rodriguez, former Congressman; San Antonio City Councilman Art Hall; San Antonio City Councilman Richard Perez; current Democratic nominee Rick Bolanos, and San Antonio attorney Rene Barrientos.

I’ve also heard we may see some more “conservative” Republicans in this race against Bonillia, who continues to see his favor among conservatives diminish. Most outlandishly, I’ve heard that former State Rep. and now State Board of Education nominee Ken Mercer may throw his hat in the ring.
