DeLay To Withdraw As Candidate, Write-In Likely
By Vince Leibowitz on Aug 8, 2006 in Replacing DeLay
Update: Phillip at BOR has quotes from DeLay. Also check out Kuff’s post for Royal Massett’s thoughts on a write-in candidacy and more goodies, including some quotes from a county chair down there who seems to be getting a bit teed-off at the whole process.Tom DeLay will resign, clearing the way for the Republican Party to field a write-in candidate for the November ballot.
The Chron has this via a “top Republican strategist” on condition of anonymity. My guess is it was Royal Massett. DeLay will supposedly make his own announcement.
No word on which of the Replacement Players will step up to the task of being a write-in. Historically, though write-ins have won congressional campaigns a hand-full of times in the last 50 years across the country, whomever it is faces an uphill battle.
Worse than that, since the Party doesn’t get to actually “pick” a write in, there is nothing to prevent David Wallace, Robert Talton and all of the other “replacement players” from throwing their hat into the ring. I suspect, however, that the GOP’s big dogs in the district will start rounding up perspective write-ins and try to get them to agree on a “one for all” strategy.
Stay tuned.
