David Wallace To Wage Write-In Candidacy For DeLay’s Spot
By Vince Leibowitz on Aug 9, 2006 in 2006 Texas Elections, Replacing DeLay
Sugar Land Mayor David Wallace will be a write-in candidate now that Tom DeLay is out of the picture, according to his staff members who are whispering in the ears of the Chron’s Kristin Mack.
I agree with this statement concerning a write-in candidacy in CD-22:
Austin political consultant Bill Miller called a write-in campaign “ludicrous.”
Cal Jillson, an SMU Professor and regular analyst for Belo’s DMN and WFAA in Dallas had a bit more:
Running a winning write-in campaign is so hard it’s almost inconceivable, Southern Methodist University political scientist Cal Jillson said.
“While that’s about the only route left open to Republicans, they’ll find it daunting to pull that off,” he said.
Although the district leans Republican, voters in the district are going to be depressed, Jillson said, and one of their responses may be to stay home as a protest.
Republicans may be better off declaring that an injustice has been done to their party and rallying for the next round, two years from now, Jillson said.
Jillson’s right on the money. For Republicans’ fund-raising efforts nationwide, they could use Texas’ Congressional District 22 as an example. As per their usual MO, they could whine about activist judges and an out-of-control federal judiciary (which now, evidently, includes Scalia) and note that it’s important for people to “give ’till it hurts” in other districts to offset the one seat Democrats have gained (even though that gain is a result of DeLay’s own actions).
But, no…they’re going to run a write in who will probably be lost in a sea of write-ins.
Not to mention that, when most people think of write-in candidates, they think of people like this guy.

Dave Wallace is committing political suicide if he decides to fight this out. He’s actually flying around the northeast today trying to raise money from fat cats in NY - for a write-in campaign!
Despite a rash of drive-by media commentary yesterday, he is most certainly not the favorite to become the write-in candidate the GOP will unite behind. And as a result of his penchant for anointing himself the frontrunner (did the same thing in April when DeLay announced), he has permanently impaired his chances of ever obtaining this seat.
The DCCC wasted no time exposing his history of questionable ethics and business partners / ventures yesterday afternoon. We’ll soon see if my Mayor intends to follow this all the way through…
