John Carter Says ‘No, No, No’ To Debate
By Vince Leibowitz on Aug 24, 2006 in 2006 Texas Elections
Will he or won’t he? That’s the question surrounding Congressman John Carter (R-Round Rock), who is now dodging not just a debate with Mary Beth Harrell (D-Kileen), but also questions about the debating.
In today’s Temple Telegram, Carter is claiming he never made a tasteless remark to the Austin American-Statesman about what it takes for an opponent to earn the right to debate him.
To boot, he now just doesn’t know if he’s going to participate in a public television station’s debate:
U.S. Rep. John Carter, R-Round Rock, said Wednesday he does not know if he will join District 31 challengers Mary Beth Harrell, a Democrat, and Matt McAdoo, a Libertarian, in a public television station KNCT-TV (Channel 46) candidate’s forum in October.
The station invited candidates in five area races to participate in forums to be taped in early October and broadcast one per night the week of Oct. 16-20.
Station rules, said Max Rudolph, general manager, are that each forum must include all candidates in a race to be broadcast. In the District 31 race, Rudolph said Ms. Harrell and McAdoo have accepted the invitation but he has not heard from Carter.
When the Temple paper contacted him about it, he had this idiotic remark:
“No, no, no - I don’t believe I’m going to be able to do that,†Carter said. “I mean, that’s public television and that’s public radio. I will have to think about that. I might do it. I haven’t decided yet.â€
What’s that supposed to mean? Public television and public radio aren’t appropriate forums?
And, he’s still dodging other debates:
Asked if he would appear in some other forum, Carter said, “We’ll see.â€
And now he’s lying about what he did or did not tell the Austin American-Statesman:
Carter was asked if he told the Austin American-Statesman that Harrell had not earned the right to appear with him on stage.
“No, not exactly,†he said. “(To) the American-Statesman, what I said was, ‘you earn the right to debate me - by (showing) your credibility,’†Carter said.â€
The Statesman piece in question, however, makes it clear what Carter really said, and goes so far as to say that the “credibility” issue came up in a follow up question.
And more lies:
“I haven’t even been invited to appear on public television,†Carter said.
But, earlier in the story is says the station manager said he invited Carter. What does the manager of a public television station have to gain about lying about debate invites?

[...] Picture and the link to the story via Capitol Annex. John Carter in this story from the TDP again shows why his handlers will not let him on stage with Mary Beth Harrell. He again has to clarify what he originally said - like the VRA/racism comments he made over the summer. As you can see via the Capitol Annex link above he’s now clarifying comments he made in the AAS last week, Carter unsure about forum. Let’s be clear about this though. This is not John Carter’s decision although he probably is going along with it but his handlers are telling that there’s no way he will ever debate Mary Beth Harrell. But you never know, as incompetent as his campaign has looked so far, it just might happen. [...] Those recent run-ins have to do with his comments regarding his decision to duck debating Mary Beth Harrell. McCaul, more than likely, is better at handling the “political discomforts” of Congress better than “Duck and Run” Carter. He’d have to try hard to do worse. But the point of this article is that they’re “assuming leadership roles”. McCaul may have a future but he hasn’t assumed anything yet. With Carter being so bad in front of a camera it’s hard to see the GOP giving him any kind of a serious leadership position. It’s doubtful he’d have any leadership in the house next year if he got reelected since he would be in the minority. Another reason TX-31 will be better off having Mary Beth Harrell in Congress next year. [...]
