Bonillia’s Tripas
By Vince Leibowitz on Aug 30, 2006 in 2006 Texas Elections
Wow. Someone—other than the people running against him—actually seem to want to hold Henry Bonillia accountable for something:
Personally, I’m eager to see if Bonilla has the tripas to walk into a few taquerias in the district and explain a few things to this new audience. In a district that is about 65 percent Hispanic, it will be interesting to see how he justifies his vote against the extension of the Voting Rights Act, the landmark legislation that gave minorities unprecedented ability to elect candidates of their choosing.
As best as I can translate, ‘tripas’ means guts. I thought it might mean “balls” but I’m sure the San Antonio Express-News’ editorial board wouldn’t allow such slang in their family-friendly paper.
Then, check out what former DNC staffer Andy Hernandez has to say about the race:
“Tony Sanchez spent $60 million in 2002 and only got 49 percent of the vote in that district. It’s not a hopeful sign,” he said, referring to the one-time Democratic nominee for governor.
Barring an unforeseen circumstance, no Democrat will even have $6 million in this race, while Bonilla is sitting on $2 million with access to more. The best-funded candidate is shaping up to be Gilliland, who kicked in $500,000 of his own money.
Unfortunately, Hernandez said, Gilliland will have to spend every penny of that $500,000 just to let people in the district know that there is such a guy who goes by the name of Lukin Gilliland.
Personally, I’m a bit weary of people saying “but Tony Sanchez spent…and only got…”. This isn’t 2002 and Tony Sanchez isn’t running. Tony Sanchez had a set of baggage all his own, too, as we well remember from Rick Perry’s campaign ads against the man who is now supporting Carole Keeton Strayhorn for governor. That says a lot right there.

tripas refers to the edible tubing that connects the two stomachs in beef cattle and also the stomach lining, also edible. So, yeah, in this context it means stomach or guts.
Balls would be HUEVOS. Which are eggs.
heh heh
Tripas or Huevos…he ain’t got em!
