Jesus Could Never Be Elected Governor In Texas
By Vince Leibowitz on Sep 6, 2006 in 2006 Texas Elections
One of many things I like about Chris Bell is that he’s not afraid to talk about religion and that he sounds a lot more sincere than Republicans doing so.
While I personally don’t think political candidates of any party should be talking about religion, it’s a modern political reality today that they do. And, Chris Bell has been one of the quickest to point out that the Republicans don’t have a monoply on faith.
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Chris Bell has criticized his party for not talking about religion and values over the last 25 years, something Republicans have done to build majorities across the country.
In a speech at Southwestern University Tuesday, Bell noted:
“Jesus had the most radical social agenda in the world…Why don’t Democrats ever invoke that?”
He’s right, you know. But, if Jesus were alive and running for governor of Texas today, he’d be sinking lower in the polls than Carole Keeton Strayhorn because he could be portrayed as weak on crime, wishy-washy on the defense of marriage (remember the “ye who is without sin cast the first stone?”) and lord knows what else.
