Bob Perry: In Hot Water

By Vince Leibowitz  on Sep 18, 2006 in WTF?

One of Texas Governor Rick Perry’s biggest campaign contributors is in some serious hot water…in Indiana.

Indiana Attorney General Steve Carter has sued the Economic Freedom Fund, a California-based group that Perry bankrolled over political telemarketing activities in the state.

It was announced today that the group has agreed to stop making automated phone calls attacking Congressional Candidate Baron Hill in Indiana.

Even so, the AG is seeking a preliminary injunction against the Economic Freedom Fund and pursuing a full-blown lawsuit in Brown County Circuit Court; a hearing on the injunction is scheduled for September 27.
The Economic Freedom Fund reportedly told the AG’s office a vendor told them it was OK to make automated calls into Indiana as long as they were placed from out of state. However, back in 1988, the Indiana Legislature passed a law making automated political calls illegal unless a live operator first comes on and asks permission to play the recording.
