Did The SBOE Gain Or Lose Ground?
By Vince Leibowitz on Sep 19, 2006 in Texas Public Policy & Taxation
It seems the MainStreamMedia is a bit confused about the AG’s opinion I wrote about yesterday.
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram interpreted it as I did, that the State Board of Education gainst more control over the content of textbooks and even had SBOE chair Geraldine Miller crowing:
“The only downside is that we didn’t get complete authority back.”
The Houston Chronicle and Dallas Morning News, however, say the SBOE lost ground. The DMN has another, different, statement from Miller:
Board chairwoman Geraldine Miller of Dallas said the board is still looking at the opinion but that part of the opinion didn’t appear to change the current system.
So, which is it. It seems as though not even Tincy Miller can decide.
Then, buried at the bottom of the DMN story, is this gem that really explains the situation:
But both she [Miller] and Texas Freedom Network, which is fighting more board control of textbook content, say they want to further study the opinion before deciding whether it gives the board more control over workbooks and other supplemental teaching materials.
Ok. So, no one really knows what yesterday’s opinion means. That’s good, because I was fearing I’d have to make a correction to yesterday’s story.
Wouldn’t it have been beneficial, by the way, for the DMN and H-Chron to lead with something more like this, though:
The State Board of Education and groups that oppose giving the board more control over the content of textbooks are taking a wait-and-see approach to determine whether or not an opinion issued by the Texas Attorney General actually gives the board more control…
Then again, when has the MSM ever made sense?
