Political Ads On YouTube

By Vince Leibowitz  on Sep 19, 2006 in 2006 Texas Elections

I was watching Juan Garcia’s new ad (which, by the way, has a couple of scenes that reminded me of a young Kennedy family at Hyannis Port) on YouTube and decided to see what other political ads from around the country might be posted.

The first one I found was this awful Republican ad for someone running for Congress outside Texas which made me not only wonder if they actually paid the licensing fee for the Twilight Zone theme song and graphics, but also if this could possibly be the meanest political ad of all time.

Also, it seems there were some great ads in the Georgia Democratic Primary for Governor. Mark Taylor, the Democrats nominee, calls himself “The Big Guy.” If you watch this ad, you’ll see why. It’s one of those ads that’s kind of sweet, but as soon as those two tiny kids ran into the arms of the very robust Taylor, I started laughing and didn’t stop until the commercial finished because after that, everything in the ad was, well, funny.  Though I didn’t follow that primary, it must have been nasty. Here’s another ad from “The Big Guy” that I think was solely web-based that’s interesting, too, and includes the song “Sweet Little Lies.”

I also found some classics, like Lyndon Johnson’s “Daisy Girl” ad.

Lots of entertaining political ads on YouTube to waste an afternoon with.
