Standing By TAKS

Generally speaking, when three out of four people say that something has problems, it has problems. It’s kind of like when you hear those commercials about “two out of three dentists” recommending something, it’s designed to make people think it’s good.
However, Rick Perry still loves the TAKS, even though three out of four candidates for governor, Raggedy Ann, The Idiot, and Chris Bell say changes are needed. (Well, The Idiot wants to dump it all together.)
Of course, Governor Aqua Net has to stand by the test. He’s now tied teacher pay to it thanks to his merit-based pay program masquerading as “bonuses.” Strayhorn, as usual, has zero credibility with regard to anything because her positions have flopped around more than the head on a rag doll. Meanwhile, Friedman is such a non-contender these days that asking him what he thinks about the TAKS test is like asking a cat what it thinks about the current season run at the Metropolitan Opera.
Anyway, Chris Bell has the right idea: the tests should not necessarily be tied to student promotion, should not be tied to bonuses, and other factors should be considered when ranking Texas schools.
