Perry: Everyone’s Target

By Vince Leibowitz  on Oct 9, 2006 in 2006 Texas Elections

If it wasn’t clear to you before the debate that Rick Perry is not only Chris Bell’s major target, but everyone else’s major target, too, then it should be now.

And, if that’s still not enough, consider that this weekend, before the Texas Association of School Boards and Texas Association of School Administrators convention, all three challengers were attacking Perry on education.

Following the debate, however Perry’s now so desparate to pump up his record, he’s digging back into his tenure as Lieutenant Governor under George W. Bush:

“Going back to when he was lieutenant governor, teachers have been given first a $3,000 pay raise and then a $2,000 pay raise. Texas now has the largest merit pay program in the nation,” Black said. “Our standards have increased, our accountability has increased and student achievement has increased under Rick Perry. That is the record, and that is a fact.”

I don’t know how much, if any, credit Perry can take for a pay raise that came about when he was Lieutenant Governor. I really don’t think, given that I believe Democrats were in charge in the House at that time and that cooler heads were prevailing in the Senate, that Perry can really take any credit whatsoever. He was simply the idiot at the wheel.
