Susan Combs: Subcontracting Out The Comptroller’s Office

By Vince Leibowitz  on Oct 9, 2006 in 2006 Texas Elections

Here’s something a bit dangerous from a story on the comptroller’s race from the H-Chron:

Combs cited state reports indicating that more than $1 billion in state taxes remain uncollected. If the comptroller’s office can’t retrieve the money in 120 days, she said, she’d hire outside firms to collect the money.

Oh. Hell. No. You’ve got to be kidding. After all, subcontracting the Accenture contract has worked out so well.

And, just who would do this collecting? I’ve already heard that Combs and other top Republican leaders have an eye on Diversified Collection Services, Inc. You’ll remember that DCS was one of several companies indicted as part of the TRMPAC scandal back in 2004.
Another thing I have heard, however, is that there are a number of law firms, which already do collections for counties and county appraisal districts, who want the job, too. DCS, being a larger outfit, however, is the one likely to get it.
