Former Texas Congressman Part Of Jackson Mayor’s Defense Team

By Vince Leibowitz  on Oct 10, 2006 in Texas Democrats

By now, we’ve all heard about Jackson, Mississippi, Mayor Frank Melton sending folks out to bust up crack houses with baseball bats (or whatever he was accused of doing).

However, there’s a new twist. Melton, who previously lived in Tyler in East Texas, has added former Texas Congressman Craig Washington (D-Houston) to his defense team.

Washington served in the Texas House from 1973 until 1982 and was a Texas Senator from 1983 until 1989. He was elected to fill Mickey Leland’s unexpired term in December 1989 and served in Congress until 1995, after being defeated by Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Houston) in the ‘94 Democratic Primary.
Washington is an East Texas native from Longview. He was one of the “People’s Five” who ran for Texas House in 1972.

Here’s what he had to say about defending Melton:

“I’m happy to be in Jackson, Mississippi, where my homeboy is here to see that justice is done,” Washington said at a news conference Monday.

Ok…..
