UPDATE: Bell Makes Statement On Kinky Situation
By Vince Leibowitz on Oct 10, 2006 in 2006 Texas Elections
After Kinky Friedman made public a private voicemail that Chris Bell left him this week, Bell has gone public with his request and has asked the humorist to exit the governor’s race:
“I had hoped to talk to Kinky privately, but now that it’s been reported by the Dallas Morning News, I’m going to ask him publicly. Please join me in defeating Rick Perry.
Kinky Friedman has done a lot in this campaign to energize voters. I am proud to count among my supporters many of his friends. Kinky and I both want what’s best for the state, and Rick Perry and Carole Strayhorn are not what’s best for Texas. They are the problem. Kinky and I agree on some very important issues and our supporters all have a lot in common; they want change. And now is the time for us all to unite and elect a new governor.
So I’m asking for Kinky to join me, and be a good shepherd for the state of Texas.â€
Smart move for Bell. He’s got Friedman on the ropes as the bad guy who will prevent another four years of the Perry era or, just as bad, Strayhorn.

[...] Chris Bell has asked Kinky Friedman to resign to save us from another Republican governor. Or as Capitol Annex says: Smart move for Bell. He’s got Friedman on the ropes as the bad guy who will prevent another four years of the Perry era or, just as bad, Strayhorn. [...]
Im thrilled Bell is doing this. he’s got ads on all the station now, prime time on cbs tonight. now if bill clinton could do a campaign swing and make it crystal clear to progressives that this race is an easy win if we vote dem chris can oust perry..
This just in: Spoiled rich kid from Highland Park whines because “that
mean ol’ Kinky” is taking all his votes.
“They’re my votes! Mine!” Bell exclaimed, pounding the floor.
The Democratic candidate, who has repeatedly failed to shake Friedman in the polls, later threatened to hold his breath until he turned blue and refused to clean his room.
Kinda reminds me of this:
Darth Vader: Luke, you do not yet realize your importance. You have only begun to discover your power. Join me, and I will complete your training. With our combined strength, we can end this destructive conflict and bring order to the galaxy.
Luke: I’ll never join you.
How is it conceivably good for the Bell campaign to be on record as admitting that a foul-mouthed Jewish guy with no party support is doing better energizing Texas voters than the combined machinery of the Democratic party and their candidate?
Or am I just dumb about politics. This is a disaster for Bell. It’s going to further energize Kinky’s supporters and make Bell look like exactly what he is: a desperate politician who can’t win this race as stands.
You’re just dumb, Jeremy. Sorry about that.
Kinky can pull out now. Joke’s over.
While I appreciate the link to your blog, I’d love to hear what exactly makes me dumb (and no points for listing the flaws in the Texas public education system.)
What’s wrong with my argument? How is it a good idea to beg other candidates with more money and better polling numbers to you to quit the race, then publicly admit you did so because he’s more exciting than you and you can’t win with him in the race? How is that a good call?

You mean deleted because you disagree with the substance. tsk, tsk. Still sexist against strong women.
