The Continued Desparation Of Van Taylor
Van “Exxon” Taylor is in serious trouble.
When an audience at a Congressional debate in a Republican district starts clapping and shouting “amen!” in response to something that the Democratic incumbent said, you know you’ve got serious problems.
And, that’s only the beginning. It seems as though Van’s personal fortune in Exxon stock (which could be as much as $25 million bucks) is becoming even more of an albatross now that Chet Edwards (D-Waco) has exposed his opponent (whose real name is Nicholas van Campen Taylor) as being against an increase in the minimum wage.
And, like Taylor’s failed appearance on network television not long ago, he was unable to do anything except dig himself into an even bigger hole:
U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Waco, said that while GOP candidate Van Taylor owns up to $25 million in Exxon Mobil stock and $2 million in pharmaceutical companies’ stocks, Taylor opposes raising the minimum wage. Edwards said he supports raising it “because it encourages work, not welfare.”
Taylor said he does not believe the government “should legislate how wealthy someone should be” and that illegal immigrants willing to work for less money have driven wages down.
What? That’s bullshit. Manufacturing jobs being shipped overseas has driven wages down. Evidently, Taylor went to the Ron Paul School of Economics.
Here’s my favorite part about this weekend’s debate, though:
When Taylor asked Edwards why he led the fight against prayer in schools, Edwards shot back that he never led such a fight. He said that he opposed government-sanctioned prayer in the late 1990s because it could lead to the government ordering children to pray to other gods.
“What I led the fight against was the government telling me what subject to pray about. That’s the act of a lifelong Christian,” Edwards said, drawing hearty applause and one loud “Amen!” from the crowd of 225 people.
You. Have. Got. To. Be. Shitting. Me.
It’s amazing. And, it illustrates exactly why Van Taylor is resorting to such filthy tactics as leaking photos they probably found on MySpace or Facebook of young campaign volunteers or Democratic activists who support Edwards and claiming they are “interns” doing irreverant things to flags.

My family is from the Waco area, and are all Republicans. They won’t even THINK about voting against Chet Edwards - they love the guy.
When I was a young Marine reservist in college, Chet Edwards’ office helped me get my GI Bill benefits fixed, after the VA had denied them for bogus reasons.
Chet cares about veterans, and he cares enough about his constituents to set aside partisanship when it matters.

I was at the debate and Vancampen is even more whiny petulent and thin-skinned in person. In addition to claiming Chet doesn’t love Jesus, Vancampen bragged AGAIN that he hasn’t bothered to read his own party’s proposed budget. He has systematically pissed off all the Republican office-holders in Johnson County with his arrogance and condescension. Frankly, I won’t be surprised if Chet carries Johnson County this time around (he didn’t even break 40% here in 2004, but that was with Dubya at the top of the ballot).

Chet and Van were on Garrett Lewis’ show this morning (1230AM) and my God Van Taylor sounds like such a doofus. Seriously. Why did they let him even run against Chet? I also read in the Waco Trib this morning that the GOP is all but going to be abandoning him (Van) where money is concerned- probably because they know he doesn’t have a chance in hell to win. http://www.wacotrib.com
