Is That A Hint Of Fear In David Dewhurst’s Eyes?

By Vince Leibowitz  on Oct 30, 2006 in 2006 Texas Elections

If you watch David Dewhurst’s campaign commercials and look very closely, you’ll notice something: he’s got just a hint of fear in his eyes.

While I’m personally scared to look that closely into Dewhurst’s eyes for fear of being turned to stone, I can only conclude such is the case.

Why? Because this guy is spending $10 million dollars (most of it his own money) in a race no one is polling and at least a quarter of the Democratic base would have trouble remembering his opponent’s name.

You could chalk it up to him being a Rich Republican. After all, the uber rich drop $10 million all the time like it’s nothing…yachts, trips to the Bahamas with James Leininger….but, I digress.

You could also chalk it up to him “boosting his name ID” for a 2010 race for Governor. That’s not it either, since everyone knows he really wants to run for U.S. Senate.

What’s the reason? It’s not to boost Republican turnout.

It is pretty simple, though. Have you guessed it yet? It’s his opponent: Maria Luisa Alvarado.

Yes, Dewhurst is afraid of something that a lot of political insiders and consultants talk about, but only behind closed doors: that Hispanic surnamed candidates are attractive to Hispanic voters.

Is that stereotypical? Of course. But, keep in mind, I didn’t invent the theory, I’m just blogging about it. To say that a Latino voter will be predisposed to vote for a Latino candidate assumes that Latino voters do nothing but go to the ballot box and look for Latino surnames to vote for. We all know that isn’t true, but some consultants (you’d be surprised how many) still think it is and I believe that is partially why Dewhurst is dropping $10 million.

Anyway, Dewhurst (he speaks!) did offer up one gem in his DMN article that we’d b remiss in not sharing with you:
“Sometimes my ideas need tweaking. Sometimes they don’t.”

Reminds me of the Almond Joy commercials: “sometimes you feel like a nut; sometimes you don’t.”

Oh, and that thing about looking into Dewhurst’s eyes and turning to stone: totally an urban legend. Like the “Biggie Smalls” urban legend, I expect it to be featured on South Park any day now.

I wouldn’t be so confident that he’s not interested in running for Governor in 2010.
