CD 4: DMN Pays Attention

Hum…The Dallas Morning News is paying attention to Congressional District 4.

They have an interesting write-up on the Hall/Melancon contest. I particularly liked what Melancon had to say about Hall, who boats of his “experience:”

“He is saying, ‘I’ve got experience,’ ” Dr. Melancon said. “But he’s supported bills that shifted jobs overseas. … Ralph Hall supported the energy bill, and we have higher energy costs. He supported a health care bill, and we have less health care.”

They should have paid attention sooner. Then, perhaps they wouldn’t have taken the woosie way out and endorsed “nobody” for the race.

The DMN backed itself into a corner back in 2004 when they declined to endorse Hall for his first-ever GOP primary and basically called him everything but a senile old man in the endorsement Op-Ed.

Now, faced with a qualified candidate but not wanting to piss off the Republican Establishment (God forbid the Rockwall Young Republicans paper their Rockwall Bureau or something), the Dallas Morning News turns yellow and shows no courage whatsoever. They had the courage to slam Hall to the wall two years ago but now….well, judge for your self:

But we can’t in good conscience recommend Ralph Hall, the 83-year-old GOP incumbent; Glenn Melancon, a smart, young Democrat challenger; or Libertarian Kurt G. Helm in this race to represent the 4th Congressional District in Washington.

And, of course, they actually point out how many times they’ve dissed Hall:

In 2001, Mr. Hall said he was “99 percent sure” he would stay through President Bush’s first term, and no more. In 2002, we urged him to make that his last term to “allow young conservative talent to step forward.” Two years ago, we saluted his 24 years of service in Congress and urged him to step aside in 2006.

Here’s hoping in 2008 both parties put forward fresh, moderate, clear-thinking candidates – one of whom we can recommend.

Ok. If they had actually looked at the candidates, they would have found that “fresh, moderate, clear-thinking candidate” in Melancon. Evidently, to the Dallas Morning News, a moderate is a candidate who genuflects every time the president says “boo.”
