CD 23: Bonilla Wants To Make It All About Pelosi

By Vince Leibowitz  on Nov 14, 2006 in 2006 Texas Elections

Via The Hill, Republicans are expecting lackluster turnout on the South Side of San Antonio to help push Henry Bonilla over the top, and are banking on making the Rodriguez/Bonilla one-on-one a referendum on  none other than House Speaker-in-waiting Nancy Pelosi:

Hufford said he expects turnout in heavily Republican northwest Bexar to carry Bonilla to victory, while the south side of San Antonio, which is vital to Rodriguez, doesn’t generally show up for runoffs.

“The Democrats really want it, but Ciro Rodriguez has lost the last two congressional races to Henry Cuellar because south Bexar County did not turn out in high numbers,” Hufford said, referring to Rodriguez’s primary losses to centrist Cuellar in 2004 and this year.

Emulating a number of Republicans, Bonilla plans to attack Rodriguez, a liberal, by linking him to presumptive House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) and the Democratic Party’s left wing.

Bonilla was quoted calling Pelosi a “socialist” in the San Antonio Express-News after the general election. “I think everyone needs to know the lay of the land,” Bonilla told The Hill. “If we have something in common, we haven’t found it yet.”

It’s true that South Side turnout in the runoff is vital to this race. And, Ciro and others involved in this race know that. And, you can bet that that’s being addressed.

As an aside, it sure was smart for Ciro to have posters and yard signs that don’t specify a race, year or district, so that they are reusable and portable.

The S. Side is split between Henry Cuellar and Henry Bonilla who have provided such lousy constituency services, and responsibilty for such a horrible infrastructure of health care and education, I have been amazed they have survived.

People remember Ciro and Frank Tejeda though.
