HD 29: Two In Race For Dawson’s Seat
By Vince Leibowitz on Nov 16, 2006 in 2006 Texas Elections
Two Republicans, Pearland City Councilman Randy Webber and businessman Mike O’Day are planning to run in the eventual special election to replace the late State Rep. Glenda Dawson (R-Pearland) in House District 29.
And, no matter how close the election is to Christmas (and never mind they are trying to follow in the footsteps of a lady who won re-election posthumously), there’s nothing like playing a good game of “I’m More Republican Than You:”
Webber says he is running on his record as a “real Republican.â€
“I currently have both Republican and Democrat opponents who are running away from their records, and I firmly believe that District 29 voters will be able to make the distinction,†Webber said.
The issue? Evidently O’Day supported Shane Sklar (D-Edna) in his attempt to unseat Congressman Ron Paul (R-Surfside), who is actually a libertarian. That, and former State Rep. Tom Uher (D-Bay City) evidently made some favorable comments about O’Day. Evidently in Pearland, that’s enough to destroy your Republican bona fides.
O’Day, however, says his bipartisan support shows he’s willing to put his constituants ahead of party politics.
Anthony DiNovo (D-Alvin), who ran against Dawson in the General, will decide this weekend whether or not he will run in the special election.

Wasn’t Dawson an ‘R’ and not a ‘D’?

Evidently =)
Andy,
You’re right. My bad! I’ll fix that.
Chris,
Hummm…methinks your pick would be the other guy, no?
Are Republicans in Perland really *that* upset about this? Heck, on some issues, Sklar was probably more conservative than Paul.
/Embracing for Chris’s onslaught of how conservative Ron Paul is, tongue in cheek. :-()
[...] The results of the November 7th election in House District 29 haven’t even been canvassed, a special election hasn’t been called (but is assured because the incumbent is deceased), but Republicans have vamped up their war over who is more “Republican.” [...]
Both of those republicans have been planning to run even before Dawson was buried. It’s sick, one of them (I’m not telling) orchestrated the whole “I’m STILL with Dawson” campaign in order to play on the heartstrings in order to guarantee a chance in the special election. If you knew some of the ties of each, you’d be amazed. They have already started the mudd slinging between the two of them. Stay tuned, because now that we are not running against a memory… the kid gloves come off and truths will come to surface. Sincerely, The campaign Manager for Dr. DiNovo.
