Sheila Jackson Lee Visits Texas A&M

One of Texas’ most liberal Congresswomen visited Texas’ most conservative universities this week.

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Houston) addressed members of the student body about diversity issues on campus, The Battalion, the A&M student newspaper, reports:

“Texas A&M is an outstanding University,” Jackson Lee said. “It’s a great institution, but you can do better.”

She said problems with diversity at A&M are nothing new, and that they have been going on for more than 15 years.

“We are just now in the budding stages in understanding what democracy is all about,” she said.

Jackson Lee said she was surprised at the apology from one creator of the racially-charged video made by three A&M students that recently appeared online.

“I found it to be perplexing,” she said. “They were trying to teach against hatred by displaying hateful acts, and that baffles me.”

Jackson-Lee said the video was not a display of the First Amendment, but hateful and provocative speech.

In her meeting with the A&M administration, Jackson Lee said they discussed the possibility of requiring diversity courses for freshmen.

“I am pleased with the administration in taking steps in improving the environment here at Texas A&M.” she said.

Jackson Lee compared discrimination to a cancer, and said that A&M must perform surgery to rid the campus of it.

“We must understand each other and accept how diverse America is,” she said.

The newspaper also reports that Jackson Lee was very well received on the campus, with one student even calling her “incredible.”
