80th Legislature: Wentworth Bill Would Protect Public School Employees’ Communication With Trustees

By Vince Leibowitz  on Dec 6, 2006 in Texas Legislature

Senate Bill 135, filed by Sen. Jeff Wentworth yesterday, immediately jumped to the top of my list of favorite bills pre-filed so far this session.

It basically protects the rights of public school employees who want to communicate directly with a member of the board of trustees of the school district.

While that may not be a big deal in places like Dallas or Houston, it is something that is very important in smaller school districts. Over the years, I’ve heard of many school employees being retaliated against, punished, and even terminated as a result of communicating with a member of the school board.

Why would a public school employee want to communicate with a school board member? Well, in smaller school districts, sometimes principals and superintendents take actions that aren’t appropriate and they play fierce games of “CYA” with each other meaning you have no way of communicating a problem up the chain of command unless you go directly to the people who renew their contracts: the school board.

Good bill by Wentworth.
