Congressman Sam Johnson Offers Beer To Repair The Rift In The Texas Delegation
By Vince Leibowitz on Dec 8, 2006 in Texas Congressional Delegation
Texas Congressman Sam Johnson (R-Plano) issued an entertaining press release congratulating Congressman Jeb Hensarling (R-Dallas) on his election as CHairman of the Republican Study Committee.
Johnson, a founder of the RSC, did not support Hensarling for Chairman. But, he’s hoping a cold beer will put the delegation schism on ice:
“I offered Jeb my congratulations and then I offered him a cold Shiner.
“I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. Jeb’s a solid conservative and a good Texan. He’ll do a fine job leading RSC in the 110th Congress.â€
I’ll say this for Johnson: it’s probably one of the most entertaining conciliatory press releases I’ve read in some time.
And, for those in D.C. who don’t know what a Shiner is (lest they think Johnson is planning on punching Hensarling in the eye), the release included this helpful paragraph:
For your information, The Spoetzl Brewery is located in Shiner, Texas. As the oldest independent brewery in Texas, the Spoetzl Brewery has been brewing up Shiner beer since 1909.
I’m sure that was helpful to the folks at Roll Call.
Now, I just wonder if the folks at Spoetzl made any campaign contributions to Johnson to get such prime press release placement. Hum….
