Dr. No In ‘08? Ron Paul To Seek Presidency
By Vince Leibowitz on Jan 11, 2007 in 2008 Presidential Race, 2008 Texas Elections
If Texas politics didn’t have your head spinning already, Congressman Ron Paul (R-Surfside) has filed the necessary paperwork to form an exploratory committee for a possible 2008 presidential run.
You’ll no doubt recall that Paul, a Republican, is actually a Libertarian. And, this isn’t his first presidential rodeo. He first ran for President as the Libertarian nominee in 1988, earning a whopping half a percent of the vote.
Evidently, “Dr. No,” who will run for president as a Republican, thinks that he can lock into an untapped reserve of Republicans who are totally anti-war, 100% pro life…and favor the gold standard.
Of course, Republicans in CD 14 are already falling all over themselves to prepare to become Paul’s successor (paging…Nancy Sinatra, anyone?).
Of course, they have more faith in Dr. No than I do.
My thoughts? I think his run is simply a vehicle to gain exposure for himself, and to raise a mint to dole out to “Liberty Caucus Ron Paul Republicans” in 2008.
After all, you should never run for president if you can’t be assured of winning your home state in a Republican Primary. Paul probably couldn’t carry the entire Gulf Coast.
I don’t think Paul will be leaving Congress. I predict he’ll “explore” until October or November (or $2 million, whichever comes first), and run for Congress again in 2008.
