Mac Thornberry Amuses Us

By Vince Leibowitz  on Jan 15, 2007 in Texas Congressional Delegation

The op-ed columns frequently published by members of Congress are often a source of amusement.

In the case of Congressman Mac Tornberry (R-Clarendon), it is particularly funny. Just check out the first three paragraphs of this one:

It was not an easy day. As I sat on the floor of the House chamber watching the new Democratic speaker from San Francisco be sworn into office, I thought of the opportunities missed when Republicans had a majority in both houses of Congress.

“It was not an easy day?” Heavens, no! I’m sure some Republicans felt it was the equivenalt of the Apocalypse. And, don’t you just love how he throws “San Francisco” out there to describe the Speaker, not even using her name?

As for those “missed opportunities,” one can only wonder what purpose it serves to bemoan those at this late hour.

But, wait, there’s more:

For a variety of reasons, including the fact that some in Congress put greed and ambition ahead of the national interest, there was now a change in management.

Uh, didn’t ten of your fellow Republican Congres members from Texas endorse one of those who put things other than national interest on the front burner? Enough said.

Change always brings with it new opportunities. As long as Democrats were a minority in Congress and out of the White House, they had no responsibility for governing. They could parry and thrust as the politics of the moment seemed to indicate.

Democrats has “no responsibility for governing?” You have got to be kidding me, Congressman! What were Democrats doing for the past several years? Playing checkers in the Speaker’s Lounge? No. The “responsibility for governing” falls on all members of Congress regardless of whether their party is in the majority.
