Perry Opposes Efforts To Dump Tuition Breaks To The Undocumented

By Vince Leibowitz  on Jan 15, 2007 in 80th Legislature

I am sure that a number of devoutly Republican families took their pictures of Rick Perry off the walls of their dining rooms over this:

Gov. Rick Perry said Thursday he’ll oppose efforts to repeal a law, which he signed six years ago, giving tuition breaks to undocumented immigrants attending state universities.

If you think you are hearing things, it’s the sound of flip-flopping. Granted, Perry may not specifically be flip-flopping on this particular issue, but this is a far cry from his impassioned anti-immigrant rhetoric of the campaign.

However, this is one flip-flop that’s I’ll give Perry credit for. He says he’s for leaving it is because he thinks the law “serves a good purpose.”

He’s right on that count.
