80th Legislature: Are Recorded Votes The Mark Of The Beast?

I simply could not resist, given that State Rep. Elliott Naishtat’s bill on recorded votes has been numbered as House Bill 666 wondering whether or not that is a commentary by the House leadership on the measure. (Wasn’t it, like, the entire subject of that whole Left Behind series?)
At any rate, the Naishtat measure would require that a vote taken by the House or Senate and all of its committees be a recorded vote if that vote was an up or down vote on a bill or an amendment or substitute to a bill, joint resolution proposing or ratifying a constitutional amendment, the appointment or election of a legislative officer or other public official, or on confirmation of an appointment or nomination to another public office.
The bill would require that how each member voted be recorded in the journal of the appropriate chamber or the minutes of the appropriate committee.
It would also require the votes (broken down by member) to be published online, and be searchable. It would also require the votes to remain up for two years.
The bottom line is that this is excellent legislation that needs to be passed. There is really not much more that can be said about it, other than that we need it (and that its number is just so…wrong…and funny at the same time).
