Is Ted Nugent Smoking Willie Nelson’s Weed?

By Vince Leibowitz  on Jan 23, 2007 in Texas Governor

When Kinky Friedman had Willie Nelson as one of his top advisors, we all just kind of looked at it and said, “well, that’s Kinky Friedman for you.”

But, the Rick Perry-Ted Nugent relationship has got to stop. Someone in the Legislature, please make this relationship as illegal as you have gay marriage and tried to make abortion. Call it the “Defense of Average Human Intellect Act.” Call it something, just do it. And quick:

In an extended interview with the Star-Telegram, Nugent said Perry called him over the weekend to express his support for the guitarist and the Confederate symbol that was emblazoned on his T-shirt at the Jan. 16 event.

“(Perry) called me to tell me, when they attack me for wearing the rebel flag, ‘be sure you tell them that I, as governor, support the waving of the rebel flag at the Laredo airport, alongside with the American, Texas and Mexican flags, and tell them to drop dead.’”

Ok. I’m just going to come out and say this: Lord in heaven, what were they both thinking?

What was Perry thinking when/if he made this call? (Nugent’s word is about as highly regarded to me as a McCall/Pitts/Craddick Triple-Pledger). What was Nugent thinking when he made this statement public?

Do neither Perry nor Nugent have any instinct for self-preservation?

Then, note this, which I must use to debunk something:

The iconic Confederate battle flag, which some view as a symbol of Southern racism, is represented in the City of Laredo logo. A city official could not say for sure if there is still one flying in front of the airport.

The reason for that is because some people have mistaken the Rebel flag for the actual flag of the Confederate States Of America.

So, here’s your history lesson: In a proper display of the six flags of Texas, this flag should be dispayed. While the CSA did switch flags a couple of times and utilized flags that included the “Rebel Flag” within them, the Rebel Flag itself was never, ever, ever the official flag. It was the CSA navy’s flag.
The “real” CSA flag is the one used in the reverse of the official state seal, I might add.

Of course, spin control has begun:

Perry spokesman Robert Black said the governor told Nugent “he had a right to wear whatever he wanted, just like the Laredo airport had the right to fly whatever flag it wanted.” Black denied that Perry told Nugent the detractors could “drop dead.”

For once, I’m actually inclined to believe something Robert Black said.
