HPV Vaccine Executive Order Detractors Numerous, Vocal
By Vince Leibowitz on Feb 5, 2007 in Texas Governor
From State Sen. Kevin Eltife (R-Tyler) and Rep. Dan Flynn (R-Van) to State Sen. Jane Nelson (R-Lewisville) and Rep. Jim Keffer (R-Eastland), opposition to Governor Perry’s executive order concerning the HPV vaccine has been swift and furious.
Eltife is asking Perry to reconsider his order. Nelson plans to seek advice from the Attorney General to determine what can be done to stop the order.
And, Capitol Annex is hearing that an anti-vaccine group may be teaming with a pro-abstinance group to challenge the executive order in court as early as this week.
The question now on the table is whether or not Perry will pull the order, or what the AG will say. I don’t think the AG has the authority to say that Perry didn’t have sufficient cause to declare an emergency to issue it, meaning the battle may well be fought out in court.
As for monetary concerns brought up at QR today, that comes as no surprise. Had Perry waited for the Lege to get its ducks in a row on this one, perhaps that wouldn’t be an issue.
