80th Legislature: Liveblogging HB 6 Hearing Before Culture Recreation & Tourism

Since the screenshot of the hearing of the House Committee on Culture, Recreation and Tourism above doesn’t show the whole room, I can’t tell if it is a more “full house” than it actually is, but I expected a much larger audience for today’s hearing on HB 6, which has 118 co-sponsors. Of course, since the Lege went so long this afternoon, it’s no surprise that there is a small crowd.
Anyway, here are some interesting quotes from George Briston of the Texas State Parks Advisory Board:
Public parks are never meant to be based on a profit and loss concept.
[…]
When people talk about closing parks because they are losers, they miss the point that Governor Neff tried to make in the 1920s…
[…]
Yes, it is true in purely budgetary terms most parks cost more than they bring in but that is only part of the economic impact they provide. They serve as economic engines for the surrounding communities.[…]
I know of no other state agency that is called upon to meet dollar-for-dollar in income for expenditures.
Good stuff.
