80th Legislature: Anti-Immigrant Legislation Before Juvenile Justice & Family Issues Committee

One of dozens of pieces of “anti-immigrant” legislation will come before the Juvenile Justice & Family Issues Committee of the Texas House today.
HB 578 by Betty Brown (R-Terrell) could aptly be defined as legislation to defend marriage from illegal immigrants. It’s totally unnecessary legislation. It would change the requirements for obtaining a marriage license so that the applicants must state, among other things, that they aren’t getting married for immigration purposes. It’s a duplicate of her HB 691, which I’ve previously discussed, and has a Senate companion, SB 47 by Jane Nelson (R-Plano).
The committee meets at 10:30 a.m. or upon final adjournment.
